We used Milano (Milan) as our home base to do different day trips to the cities we were interested in seeing! Milano is a urban modern city that gave a feel of Chicago or New York with the occasional Italian flair and very big on fashion and trends which is not really our thing so we weren’t interested in spending a ton of time here. There was still a couple things I wanted to see in Milan besides just the hotel, so we picked a couple sights to explore before we jetted off to Prague. If in the area Milano is definitely worth a day trip especially if you’re flying out of their main airport Milan Malpensa (MXP).
Building
Duomo- this one is a no brainer! We did not get there with enough time to go inside due to me sleeping in (I’m still kicking myself about this) but we did see the outside! Definitely book tickets in advance if you can to skip the line- that thing was an hour long. Regardless this was probably one of the best buildings we saw this trip!
Food-
We ate a ton of prosciutto and cheese tapas plates here and this place happened to stand out. We got a carafe of white wine for 7 euro. It was amazing and affordable! Plus the plates of food….wow. I’m now on a dairy hiatus but dairy in Italy is 10000 x better than in the US
Drink
Prosecco was our go to here, and it was great. Italy is very good at sparkling wine and I prefer Prosecco to champagne 90% of the time (the other 10% is if it’s Dom Perignon or similar). Wine here was cheaper or just as cheap as water! You can’t go wrong ordering the house wine, and their Rose is also particularly good, my second favorite to sparkling wine.
Sight
Castello Sforzesco (Sforza Castle) is surrounded by a huge park and the entire urban center of Milan. Now that we saw the urban duomo, here’s the urban castle:
Painting
We had to see The Last Supper, and let me just say it was superior in every way to viewing Da Vinci’s most popular painting Mona Lisa at the Louvre. Not only is the painting a masterpiece, The Last Supper only takes reservations where a select number of people are allowed to view it at once. They are super strict on the times too and sell out, so if be sure to book in advance if you’re heading here. On the opposite side of the hall Crucifixion by Giovanni Donato da Montorfano is displayed. I feel slightly bad for that painting because it is also super awesome the Last Supper gets all the attention.
